Brake Caliper, Removing and Installing, 1LJ, 1ZD Brakes

  Note

In the following description the brake caliper is removed with the brake carrier and pads. The brake hose remains connected.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  • Torque Wrench 1332 40-200Nm -VAG1332-

Removing

- Remove the affected front wheel, refer to → Suspension, Wheels, Steering; Rep. Gr.44; Wheels and Tires.

- Unclip the brake hose and the brake pad wear display wire.

- Remove the bolts -15- and carefully remove the brake caliper with the brake carrier and the installed brake pads from the brake rotor.

  Note

For an easier removal of the brake caliper from the brake rotor, push the installed brake pads slightly back.

  Caution

  • Do not let the brake caliper with the brake carrier hang on the brake hose. Do not support the weight with the brake hose.
  • Replace the brake hose if damaged.
  • Do not press the brake pedal when the caliper is removed.

- Hang the brake caliper on the body using a suitable wire.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

  WARNING

Health Risk.

Do not blow out brake system with compressed air.

  Note

  • Replace the brake caliper bolts.
  • Use only mineral spirits to clean the brake caliper.

- Clean the brake caliper.

- Slide the brake caliper with the brake carrier and the installed brake pads over the brake rotor.

- Tighten the new bolts -15-.

- Insert the brake hose and the brake pad wear display wire into the bracket.

  Note

  • Make sure that the electrical wire and brake hose are routed correctly.
  • Make sure the brake hose is not blocked, bent or rubbing against the vehicle.

- Install the front wheel, refer to → Suspension, Wheels, Steering; Rep. Gr.44; Wheels and Tires.

  WARNING

Risk of accident!

  • Before moving vehicle, depress brake pedal several times firmly to properly seat brake pads in their normal operating position.
  • Make sure the brakes are working correctly before driving the vehicle.

  Note

In the following description the brake caliper is removed with the brake pads. The brake hose remains connected.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

  • Torque Wrench 1332 40-200Nm -VAG1332-

Removing

  Caution

There is a risk of malfunctions.

The bolts -arrows- on the brake caliper for the brake carrier -1- and the tension strut -2- may not be loosened.

- Remove the affected front wheel, refer to →Suspension, Wheels, Steering; Rep. Gr.44.

- Disconnect the brake pad wear sensor connector -2-.

  Note

Ignore item -1-.

  Note

For easier removal of the brake caliper from the brake rotor, push the brake pads -3 and 4- back lightly with pliers -1-. To prevent damage to the coating on the brake caliper, place a piece of rubber -2- between the pliers and brake caliper.

- Unscrew the bolts -arrows- and carefully remove the brake caliper with the brake pads from the brake rotor.

  Caution

  • Do not let the brake caliper hang on the brake hose. Do not support the weight with the brake hose.
  • Replace the brake hose if damaged.
  • Do not press the brake pedal when the caliper is removed.

- Hang the brake caliper on the body using a suitable wire.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal. Note the following:

  WARNING

  • Replace the brake carrier bolts.
  • Use only mineral spirits to clean the brake caliper.

- Clean the brake caliper.

- Slide the brake caliper with the brake pads installed carefully over the brake rotor.

- Tighten the new bolts -arrows-.

- Connect the connector -2-.

  Note

  • Make sure that the connector and brake hose are routed correctly.
  • Make sure the brake hose is not blocked, bent or rubbing against the vehicle.

- Install the front wheel, refer to →Suspension, Wheels, Steering; Rep. Gr.44.

  WARNING

Risk of accident!

  • Before moving vehicle, depress brake pedal several times firmly to properly seat brake pads in their normal operating position.
